Oklahoma
City, May 17, 2010 - Over 500 members of the northeast Oklahoma City community
joined the It’s My Community Initiative organization on May 15, 2010 for a
one-mile walk to promote healthy living. The walk started at Douglass High School and took participants along
Martin Luther King Blvd. before returning to the school. Before and after the walk, participants had
the opportunity to visit with over 30 vendors (set up in the school’s gymnasium)
to learn about everything from diabetes to heart disease to the benefits of
Zoomba and Thai Chi.
“The Get
Fit, Stay Healthy event was a great experience for everyone who attended,” said
Sandino Thompson, Executive Director, It’s My Community Initiative. “The goal
was to help educate the community on the leading causes of death among African
American women in Oklahoma, which are heart disease, cancer, stroke and obesity, and the
second leading cause is diabetes.Because of the tremendous presence of local health providers, nutritionists
and exercise professionals, we are off to a wonderful start.”
The Get
Fit, Stay Healthy event is the first of many initiatives that will benefit
northeast Oklahoma City.It’s My
Community Initiative would like to thank Integris Health, Perry Publishing,
KVPS and KRMP radio stations, State Farm, Subway and Tinker Federal Credit
Union for their sponsorship and support.
